The cost-effectiveness of a sex-neutral program is highly dependent on the price of the vaccine, the lower the price the more favourable it is to also vaccinate boys. Most vaccines that are part of the Swedish child vaccination programme are given as combination vaccines, i.e. vaccines against several diseases are given in the same shot in order to minimize the number of injections. All vaccinations within the vaccination programme for children are voluntary and offered free of charge. A time relationship exists between the start of vaccination and the increase in the incidence of cervical cancer. The HPV vaccines were approved in 2006 and 2007, respectively and most young girls started to be vaccinated during 2012-2013.
HPV vaccines that prevent HPV 16 and 18 infections are now available and have the potential to reduce the incidence of cervical and other anogenital cancers. This report provides key information for Sweden on: cervical cancer; other anogenital cancers and head HPV before the age of 20. The virus infection has then continued over many years, and has eventually caused abnormal cell structures. Over time, these alterations have developed into cancer. On 1 January, 2010 a new vaccination will be introduced in the Swedish vaccination program for children. Table 6.
