Juno's Latest Flyby of Jupiter Captures Two Massive Storms Upcoming 16th science pass of Jupiter marks Juno’s halfway point in prime mission data collection. Juno uses a spinning, solar-powered spacecraft in a highly elliptical polar orbit that avoids most of Jupiter’s high-radiation regions. Although the main spacecraft was built by Lockheed Martin , Juno’s instruments and components came from all over the world. Juno will be the second spacecraft to orbit Jupiter, following the Galileo probe which orbited from 1995–2003.

Using long-proven technologies on a spinning Some 66 feet (20 meters) wide, the Juno spacecraft is a dynamic engineering marvel, spinning to keep itself stable as it makes sweeping elliptical (oval-shaped) orbits around Jupiter. At their widest point, these carry Juno far from the giant planet and its moons, keeping it mostly clear of heavy radiation regions.
